John Zorn
John Zorn (born 1953) is a New York-based composer, saxophonist, and producer whose work spans free jazz, hardcore, klezmer, noise, film music, chamber composition, and occult ritual sound. A central figure in the downtown New York avant-garde since the late 1970s, he developed game-piece systems for improvising musicians and founded Naked City, Masada, and numerous other ensembles. He founded the Tzadik label in 1995 for his own recordings and those of musicians in marginal or underdocumented fields. His output is enormous and deliberately eclectic, treating genre as material, and his influence on experimental and jazz practice is pervasive.
