John Oswald
Born on 30 May 1953 in Kitchener, Ontario, this Canadian composer, saxophonist, and media artist coined the term "plunderphonics" in a 1985 paper presented at the Wired Society Electro-Acoustic Conference in Toronto. His 1988 Plunderphonics EP, distributed free to radio stations, was ordered destroyed by the Canadian Recording Industry Association after pressure from Michael Jackson's label. From 1993 to 1996 he produced Grayfolded, a double-disc work assembled from over a hundred live recordings of the Grateful Dead's "Dark Star," commissioned by the band.
