JODI
JODI is the collaborative net art practice of Joan Heemskerk (b. 1968) and Dirk Paesmans (b. 1965), active since 1994. Working with websites, software, video games, and computer systems, they expose hidden structures and visual noise latent in digital technology, making visible protocols that ordinarily function as transparent infrastructure. Their early websites — apparently broken interfaces, cascading characters, visual chaos — were foundational net art, showing how the browser could be a medium for formal experimentation. Their later works extended this into modified video games, including the Wolfenstein 3D-based SOD (1999), and into installations surveyed in a Whitney retrospective.
