Joana Guerra

Joana Guerra is a cellist, singer and composer born in 1983 in Rinchoa, on the outskirts of Lisbon. After a degree in Portuguese literature, she turned to the cello as a vehicle for acoustic experimentation, developing extended techniques that pulled her into Lisbon's free improvisation scene. She has released four solo albums, most recently Chão Vermelho (Miasmah Records, 2020), which drew wide critical notice for its stark, voice-and-cello sound world. Beyond solo work she moves through collaborative projects including Lantana, the Alvaret Ensemble, a duo with guitarist Gil Dionísio, and Tratado de Cardew, built around the graphic scores of Cornelius Cardew.
