Jimmie Durham

Jimmie Durham (b. 1940, Washington, Arkansas) is an American artist and writer of Cherokee descent whose work in sculpture, performance, and text has consistently addressed Native American identity, colonialism, and the violent histories embedded in everyday objects. His sculptures — incorporating found materials, animal parts, and handwritten texts — are simultaneously lyrical and politically pointed. He was a founding member of the American Indian Movement's international commission and has lived in Europe since 1994. He received the Golden Lion at Venice in 2019 for lifetime achievement.
