Janet Cardiff

Born in 1957 in Brussels, Ontario, she earned her BFA from Queens University in 1980 and her MVA from the University of Alberta in 1983, where she met longtime collaborator and husband George Bures Miller. She created her first audio walk in 1991 during a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, and gained international recognition for the form in 1995. Using binaural audio, her walks layer recorded voices and sounds over real environments, creating a spectral doubling of place. In 2020 she and Miller were awarded the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize, given every five years to artists working in sculpture.
