Isobel Campbell
Isobel Campbell is a Glasgow-born cellist, vocalist and songwriter who joined Belle and Sebastian in 1996, contributing to their defining records before leaving the group in 2002 to pursue solo work as the Gentle Waves and under her own name. She is best known for three albums recorded with former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan: Ballad of the Broken Seas (2006), Sunday at Devil Dirt (2008) and Hawk (2010), pairing her hushed, folk-inflected voice against his gravel baritone in a country-noir duet. Ballad of the Broken Seas earned a Mercury Prize shortlisting and an Ivor Novello nomination. Her later solo albums explore chamber-pop and jazz-tinged arrangements.
