Ilmar Laaban
Ilmar Laaban (1921–2000) was an Estonian poet and Surrealist who fled to Sweden after the Soviet occupation of Estonia, where he became a significant figure in Swedish and European literary culture. He translated Surrealist poets into Estonian and Swedish, and his own poetry combined Surrealist imagery with complex, multi-layered linguistic games. His sound poetry and vocal performances, drawing on his multilingual background, contributed significantly to Scandinavian experimental culture. He was also a significant art critic and cultural mediator between Estonian exile culture and the broader European avant-garde.
