Ikue Mori

Ikue Mori (born 1953) is a Japanese-American musician based in New York. Originally drummer for the downtown no-wave group DNA alongside Arto Lindsay in the late 1970s, she developed in the 1990s into a drummer working entirely with laptop and tabletop electronics, using custom software to produce dense, rhythmically complex sound without conventional percussion. She has collaborated extensively with John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, and Bill Laswell among many others, and is a key figure in both the New York downtown scene and the international free improvisation community. Her Tzadik releases document a practice defined by precision, wit, and systematic formal exploration.
