Ibimeni

Ibimeni refers to music of the Garifuna people — an Afro-Indigenous community descended from the union of West and Central African peoples and the Island Caribs of the Lesser Antilles, now living primarily in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and diaspora communities in the United States. The Garifuna musical tradition — including the punta, paranda, and hungu-hungu — integrates African drumming, chant, and dance with Amerindian vocal styles. Ibimeni recordings document this living tradition; Garifuna musical culture was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2001.
