Hong Chulki
Born in Seoul in 1976, Hong Chulki co-founded Astronoise with Choi Joonyong in 1997, the first Korean live noise act, and the label Balloon and Needle in 2000. He began exploring turntables and other playback devices as instruments in the early 2000s, developing a cartridge-less technique that treats the turntable as a sound-generating object rather than a record player. His practice centres on collective non-idiomatic improvisation, and he has collaborated with Ryu Hankil, Jin Sangtae, Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M., Jason Kahn, and Zbigniew Karkowski. He has also composed soundtracks for Korean experimental film, including work with the production company Goksa.
