Hilary Jeffery

Born in Surbiton, England in 1971, Jeffery took up the trombone at eleven and built a practice he describes as desert trombonism, rooted in a formative journey to the Sahara in 1990. He studied at Dartington College of Arts, the University of York, and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague under James Fulkerson, and developed the tromboscillator — trombone amplified and transformed through live electronics. His work spans free improvisation, contemporary classical, rock, and Indian classical traditions; from 2013 he studied Dhrupad with Amelia Cuni. He is a member of the ensemble Zeitkratzer and the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, and is based in Berlin.
