Hans W. Koch
Born in 1962, Koch lives and works in Cologne, where he studied composition with Johannes Fritsch at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln from 1988 to 1995. His work spans chamber and orchestral pieces, experimental scores for instruments with computers and everyday objects, sound installations, and electronic music. Since the 1980s he has engaged with the concept of total harmony introduced by Russian composer Nikolai Obouhow, developing a body of works he calls the O. theorem. He has been a professor of sound at the Academy for Media Arts Cologne since 2016, and his deep engagement with John Cage and Morton Feldman extends to performance as well as composition.
