Hanne Darboven
Born in Munich in 1941, Darboven studied painting at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg before relocating to New York in the mid-1960s, where contact with Sol LeWitt and Joseph Kosuth shaped her turn toward conceptual systems. She developed a private notation based on calendar dates, deriving numerical sequences that she transcribed by hand across thousands of sheets of paper. Her monumental Kulturgeschichte 1880–1983 ran to 1,590 framed works. A trained pianist, she also composed music from these systems, most notably Wende 80, which set a political interview as a scored work. She lived and worked in Hamburg-Rönneburg until her death in 2009.
