Hankwood and the Hammerheads

Formed in New York in 2010 after a last-minute slot at a Crazy Spirit gig, the band was built around vocalist Hank Wood, whose father drummed in Richard Hell and the Voidoids and whose stepfather was avant-garde jazz saxophonist Rob Brown. The Hammerheads combine snarling garage punk with Latin percussion and a deep R&B groove, the lineup expanding to include organ and congas. Their self-titled debut appeared on the Static Age Musik label, followed by Go Home and Stay Home, each record refining a raw, amphetamine-tension sound that sits between hardcore urgency and the swaggering looseness of New York soul.
