Gunnar Schmidt

Gunnar Schmidt is a German media theorist and artist whose work investigates the relationships between media technology, body, and cultural formation. His theoretical writings — on physiognomy, biometrics, and visual media — contribute to understanding how technologies of vision and recognition shape subjectivity and social control. As an artist and researcher, he develops projects that make visible the often invisible workings of media systems and their implications for identity and politics. He teaches at various institutions in Germany and contributes to interdisciplinary academic and artistic discourse.
