Gordon Monahan
Born in Kingston, Ontario in 1956 and trained in physics before graduating in music from Mount Allison University in 1980, this Canadian sound artist and composer has built a practice around the acoustical extremes of the piano, natural forces, and electronically mediated environments. His Speaker Swinging (1982) generates Doppler Effect trance music through physical performance. Long Aeolian Piano (1984–88) harnesses wind through string installations, while Aquaeolian Whirlpool (1990) uses water vortices. He won First Prize at the 1984 CBC National Radio Competition for Young Composers and was DAAD artist-in-residence in Berlin from 1992 to 1993.
