Gilbert & George

Gilbert Proesch, born in South Tyrol in 1943, and George Passmore, born in Plymouth in 1942, met on 25 September 1967 while studying sculpture at Saint Martin's School of Art in London and have worked together ever since. Declaring their entire lives a form of sculpture, they developed their signature large-scale photomontages in the 1970s, combining images of themselves — always in matching business attire — with material addressing sexuality, race, death, and British society. Their work is held by the Tate and major international collections. They married in 2008 and celebrated fifty years of collaboration in 2017.
