Gijs Gieskes

Born in 1977 and based in Eindhoven, this Dutch electronic musician and industrial designer studied at Design Academy Eindhoven and has built custom audiovisual instruments since 1998. Working through circuit-bending, modular synthesis, and electro-mechanical construction, he invents devices that often re-appropriate obsolete technologies. His approach is self-taught in key respects: early innovations included using a speaker as a relay and independently rediscovering the vactrol and phase-locked loop. His hand-built instruments are sold as kits and exhibited internationally, and he has performed at the Ableton Loop festival and Sonic Acts.
