George Lewis
George Lewis (born 1952) is an American trombonist, composer, and scholar, a central figure of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and a pioneer of interactive computer music. His Voyager system (from 1987) is an interactive composition environment that responds to live musicians with its own improvisational logic. His scholarly work — particularly A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music (2008) — is a foundational text for understanding the history of African American experimental music. He is a professor at Columbia University and continues to perform and compose actively.
