Geoffrey Hendricks

Known as the Cloudsmith for his lifelong devotion to sky imagery, this New Hampshire-born Fluxus artist (1931–2018) began his sky series in 1965 on Cape Breton Island, painting clouds on found work boots, and continued transferring sky imagery to objects, vehicles, and textiles throughout a fifty-year practice. He taught at Rutgers University from 1956 to 2003 and was instrumental in staging early Fluxus events there, including a Flux-Mass with George Maciunas and a 1970 performance by Hermann Nitsch. His political and ecological activism remained inseparable from his art until his death.
