Geert-Jan Hobijn

Founder of the Amsterdam-based Staalplaat network in 1982, he has built one of experimental music and sound art most enduring platforms, encompassing a record label, the cassette imprint Staaltape, a shop, and the Staalplaat Soundsystem. Born in 1959, his artistic practice amplifies and repurposes everyday objects — consumer appliances, trees, trains, cars — to generate unexpected sonic and spatial qualities. Staalplaat Soundsystem, active since 2000, creates large-scale outdoor sound art installations in industrial and urban public spaces. He received the Witteveen+Bos Art and Technology Award in 2014.
