Franz Graf

Born in 1954 in Tulln, Austria, Franz Graf studied at the University for Applied Arts Vienna under Oswald Oberhuber and has lived and worked in Vienna ever since. Drawing is the central medium of his practice, though his installations bring together photography, text, audio, and everyday objects to form what he describes as open systems rather than multimedia presentations. Language, font design, and the interplay of figuration and abstraction give his work a distinctive pictorial character that he has developed across four decades. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1997 to 2006. Major institutional exhibitions have been held at the Belvedere, Wien Museum, and 21er Haus.
