Francis Picabia

Francis Picabia (1879–1953) was a French-Cuban avant-garde artist associated with Dada and Surrealism, whose restless practice encompassed painting, writing, poetry, film, and music. His sound-related legacy connects primarily to the Dadaist performance tradition — collaborative events with Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and others that mixed absurdist text, music, and image. His Ballet Relâche (1924) featured music by Erik Satie and film by René Clair. Picabia's influence on experimental sound practice is primarily through his theoretical and performative engagement with noise, chance, and anti-art, rather than through any sustained musical composition.
