Faust

Faust are a German experimental rock group formed in Wümme in 1971. With access to a converted schoolhouse studio and Polydor backing, they produced Faust (1971) and So Far (1972), placing them alongside Can and Amon Düül II as founders of Krautrock. Their approach was radical: collage, concrete music, free improvisation, and rock combined in ways that had no precedent. The Faust Tapes (1973) became an unlikely best-seller. They dissolved in 1975, reformed in 1990 with rotating membership, and have continued recording with sustained invention, most recently on Bureau B.
