Exonemo

Formed in 1996 by SEMBO Kensuke and AKAIWA Yae, Exonemo is a Japanese art unit that works across digital and analogue environments to expose the relationships between technology and its users. Their practice encompasses video, installation, performance, and internet-based work, and is characterised by humour, subversion, and an investigation of how digital media shapes everyday life. In 2006 their work The Road Movie won a Golden Nica at Ars Electronica. Since 2012 they have organised the Internet Yami-Ichi, a flea market making the immaterial matter of cyberspace tangible through online-themed objects, held in Tokyo, New York, and beyond. They have been based in New York since 2015.
