Emmett Williams

Born in Greenville, South Carolina on 4 April 1925, Emmett Williams studied poetry with John Crowe Ransom at Kenyon College and anthropology at the University of Paris before spending most of the 1950s and 1960s in Europe. He participated in the Darmstadt concrete poetry circle from 1957 to 1959 and became European coordinator of Fluxus in the 1960s, working closely with Robert Filliou and George Maciunas. He edited the foundational An Anthology of Concrete Poetry for Something Else Press, and in 1991 published the autobiography My Life in Fluxus — And Vice Versa. He died in Berlin on 14 February 2007.
