Drexciya

Detroit electro duo formed by James Stinson (1969–2002) and Gerald Donald, who met at Kettering Senior High School and spent three years refining their sound before debuting with Deep Sea Dweller in 1992. Their music—dancefloor electro dense with retro machine-funk and aquatic textures—was inseparable from a sustained science fiction mythology: Drexciyans were an underwater civilisation descended from enslaved African women thrown overboard during the Middle Passage. Stinson, the conceptual heart of the duo, died in September 2002 of a heart condition. Donald continues under aliases including Dopplereffekt, Arpanet, and Der Zyklus.
