Doris Jones

Doris Jones was an American vaudeville and novelty singer active in the late 1920s, known by the nickname Seal Flapper — a stage persona within the era's fashion for eccentric and comedic vocal performance. Little biographical documentation survives. Her 78rpm recordings were released on minor regional labels and circulated through touring tent shows and variety stages. Her vocal style drew on the call-and-response traditions of Black American vernacular music while incorporating the theatrical exaggeration typical of novelty blues. Jones represents the largely unchronicled world of Depression-era performers whose work surfaces only through specialist collectors and reissue archivists.
