Disband
Disband was an all-female No Wave performance group active in New York City from 1978 to 1982. Founded by Martha Wilson, Daile Kaplan, and Barbara Ess, its core members included Ilona Granet, Donna Henes, Ingrid Sischy, Diane Torr, and Martha Wilson; early participants also included April Gornick and Barbara Kruger, who wrote some of their songs. Modelled on the formal structure of a rock band but composed entirely of visual artists and non-musicians, the group quickly abandoned conventional instruments in favour of voices, harmonies, clapping, and stomping — producing a kind of a cappella No Wave that was witty, physically direct, and intellectually biting.
