Dick Higgins

American artist, composer, and publisher (15 December 1938 – 25 October 1998) who was a co-founder of Fluxus and one of its most prolific theorists. In 1965 he coined the term intermedia to describe hybrid art forms occupying the space between established disciplines—sound poetry, visual poetry, happenings. His Something Else Press (1963–1974) published major avant-garde figures including John Cage, Gertrude Stein, Dieter Roth, Emmett Williams, and George Brecht, helping disseminate experimental art and writing internationally. In a sixty-year life he made sound works, films, happenings, paintings, drawings, and book art alongside theoretical writing on intermedia and Fluxus.
