Diana Deutsch

Diana Deutsch is a British-American cognitive psychologist and music researcher based at the University of California, San Diego. Her work has produced foundational discoveries in the psychology of music and auditory perception, including the tritone paradox, the scale illusion, and the octave illusion — phenomena that reveal how the brain processes and organises musical sound. She has published recordings of auditory demonstrations that double as both scientific tools and musical experiences in their own right, and her work bridges music cognition and experimental composition. Speech to Song Illusion (2003) demonstrates how language can transform into perceived melody through repetition.
