Formed in Caen in 1979 by Jean-Luc André, Sylvie Martineau-Fée, and Jean-Philippe Fée—all alumni of the Beaux-Arts de Caen—Déficit Des Années Antérieures became one of the defining groups of the French experimental underground. Their sound draws on avant-punk, surrealist improvisation, industrial, lo-fi no-wave, and electro-acoustic collage, filtered through a naïve and emotionally direct aesthetic. Active for over two decades, the collective participated in more than thirty international compilations, released six cassettes, six 45s, four LPs, and five CDs, and produced seven video works. Collaborations with reference artists from across the international underground have continued.
