David Shea

David Shea (born 1965) is an American composer and turntablist based in New York, associated with the downtown experimental scene and John Zorn's Tzadik label. He developed a practice of composing with vinyl records and turntables as primary instruments, assembling collages from film music, classical recordings, found sound, and pop debris into complex, associative electroacoustic works. His Tzadik releases — particularly Orpheus (1996) and Book of Knives (1994) — are characteristic examples of the downtown approach to sampling as composition. He has collaborated with Zorn, Ikue Mori, and numerous others, and has composed soundtracks for film and dance.
