Christine Sun Kim
Born in 1980 in Southern California, this Deaf American artist uses drawing, video, performance, and installation to examine the social rules that govern sound and the politics of hearing culture. Her first language is American Sign Language. She received MFAs from the School of Visual Arts and Bard College and now lives in Berlin. Her Degrees of Deaf Rage series of charcoal drawings depicted the catalogue of indignities imposed on Deaf people by the hearing world. In 2020 she performed at Super Bowl LIV, signing the national anthem in a landmark collaboration with the NFL and the National Association of the Deaf.
