Christian Nyampeta

Christian Nyampeta is an artist, filmmaker and organizer born in 1981 in Kigali, Rwanda, working between Amsterdam, London and New York. Holding a PhD in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths, he treats moving image and gatherings as pedagogical spaces, following Ousmane Sembène's notion of cinema as an "evening academy." His practice asks how to live together, drawing on vernacular knowledge disrupted by colonial education. He runs Radius, an itinerant radio project, and convenes a working group in Nyanza, Rwanda. His work, including the film Sometimes It Was Beautiful, has shown at the Guggenheim, the Istanbul Biennial and Sonic Acts, foregrounding memory and collective authorship.
