Choi Joonyong
Born in Seoul in 1977, this South Korean sound artist began playing in experimental contexts in 1996 and co-founded the noise duo Astronoise with Hong Chulki in 1997. His practice centers on playback devices — CD players, tape machines, VCRs — treated as instruments, exploring the failure and control of reproduction through improvisation and composition. In 2003 he and Chulki co-founded Balloon and Needle, an influential label documenting the Korean experimental and improvised music scene. He has performed internationally in contexts ranging from EAI to free improvisation.
