Charlotte Moorman

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1933 and died in 1991, this American cellist and performance artist trained at Juilliard and founded the Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York. From 1964 she developed a collaboration with Nam June Paik that lasted nearly three decades, performing works including Opera Sextronique, during which she was arrested for performing topless, and TV Cello, in which television monitors replaced the body of her instrument. Known as the Jeanne d'Arc of new music, she was central to the expansion of what concert performance could mean.
