Charlemagne Palestine
Charlemagne Palestine (b. 1945, Brooklyn) is an American composer, performance artist, and visual artist who developed a highly personal practice of strumming technique and ritual performance in the 1970s. His piano work — including Strumming Music (1974) — uses rapid, sustained patterns to generate overtone-rich tonal accumulations. He has performed with brandy and stuffed animals as ritualistic elements. A student of Morton Feldman's approach to duration, he released on Shandar and has been reissued on Sub Rosa. His commitment to performance as ceremony has remained constant across six decades.
