Carsten Nicolai

Born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, now Chemnitz, this German artist and musician works under his own name as a visual artist and as Alva Noto as an electronic musician. His music pursues a reductive engagement with acoustics, digital signals, and visual structure, and his label NOTON, later merged into Raster-Noton, was central to the development of minimal electronic music. Collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto have included the co-score for The Revenant in 2015. He has held a professorship at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts since 2015.
