Carlfriedrich Claus

Carlfriedrich Claus (1930–1998) was a German artist and philosopher who worked across poetry, drawing, graphics, and acoustics from his base in Annaberg-Buchholz in the GDR. From the 1950s onward he explored language and writing in terms of their tonal and visual content, producing intricate speech sheets and acoustic works that investigated pre-linguistic processes and human consciousness. His practice crossed the borders of the GDR and connected with international networks of visual and phonetic poetry.
