Carl Craig

Carl Craig, born 1969 in Detroit, is a leading figure of techno's second wave, fusing the city's machine-funk lineage with jazz and orchestral ambition. He apprenticed with Derrick May before founding Planet E Communications in 1991, a label that has released Kevin Saunderson, Moodymann and Kenny Larkin alongside his own work. Recording as Psyche, BFC and Innerzone Orchestra, he released "Bug in the Bassbin" (1992), a track UK producers Goldie and 4hero cited as a direct blueprint for drum and bass. His albums, from Landcruising (1995) through More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art (1997), pushed techno toward melodic depth rarely attempted at the time.
