Biosphere

Biosphere is the alias of Geir Jenssen (born 1962), a Norwegian electronic musician and producer from Tromsø. A pioneer of ambient electronic music in the 1990s, he developed a sound characterised by long, slow evolving textures, sparse beats, and field recordings, drawing on Arctic landscapes and science fiction imagery. Substrata (1997) is widely regarded as a landmark of ambient music, building sustained drone environments from minimal material over extended durations. He has released extensively on Apollo/R&S and his own Biophon label, and has collaborated with Røyksopp. His work is closely tied to notions of northern geography, isolation, and the aesthetics of vast, cold space.
