Ben Morea

Ben Morea is an American anarchist artist who was a central figure in New York's radical underground in the 1960s and early 1970s. He co-founded Black Mask — a group producing confrontational street art attacking the commodification of culture — and helped form Up Against The Wall Motherfucker, a loosely organised affinity group that carried out direct actions in New York, including occupying Lincoln Center and distributing free food in Central Park. His practice drew on Situationist and Dada strategies, treating art and politics as inseparable. By decade's end, facing police attention, Morea withdrew into rural communes, later re-emerging to paint and discuss Black Mask's legacy.
