Behemoth
Behemoth is a Polish extreme metal band formed in Gdańsk in 1991 by guitarist-vocalist Nergal (Adam Darski), ranking alongside Vader and Hate as a founder of Poland's extreme metal underground. Early albums pursued raw black metal before Satanica (1999) turned toward the dense, technically brutal blackened death metal sound the band became known for, carried further on Demigod, The Apostasy and Evangelion. In 2010 Nergal was diagnosed with leukemia, received a bone marrow transplant, and returned within a year, ahead of the acclaimed 2014 album The Satanist. The band has drawn legal controversy in Poland, including prosecution over Nergal tearing up a Bible on stage in 2007.
