Bauhaus

Bauhaus was an English post-punk band formed in Northampton in 1978, comprising Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins. Their debut single Bela Lugosi's Dead (1979) — nine minutes of gothic atmospherics, minimal dub-inflected bass, and Murphy's theatrical baritone — effectively inaugurated the gothic rock genre. Albums In the Flat Field (1980) and Mask (1981) extended their exploration of dramatic, dark post-punk. Though they dissolved in 1983, individual members continued through Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets, and Bauhaus reunited on multiple occasions. Their visual and sonic vocabulary became definitive reference points for gothic culture.
