Bastro

Bastro was an American post-hardcore and noise rock band from Chicago, formed in 1987 by David Grubbs, John McEntire, and Bundy K. Brown — the core of what would become Gastr del Sol and later contributing members to Tortoise. Their aggressive, jagged guitar work and complex rhythms placed them between noise rock and post-hardcore, releasing on Homestead Records and Touch and Go. Albums Diablo Guapo (1990) and Sing the Troubled Beast (1990) are important documents of the Chicago underground before the post-rock movement crystallised around their successors. Grubbs's later solo work and Gastr del Sol continued their experimental ambitions.
