A New York-based curator and writer, she joined the Museum of Modern Art in 1970 and went on to found its video collection and exhibition programs, overseeing the acquisition of more than 500 media art works across four decades. She organized early solo presentations of Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Joan Jonas, Laurie Anderson, and Gary Hill, and was among the first curators in the United States to present work by Chinese video artists. She taught at Yale and Columbia and published Video/Art: The First Fifty Years, a history of the medium.
