Barbara Bloom

Born in Los Angeles in 1951, she studied at Bennington College and received her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1972 under mentor John Baldessari. For nearly two decades she lived in Europe, first in Amsterdam then Berlin, before settling in New York. Loosely affiliated with the Pictures Generation, her installations, photography, and books explore notions of collecting, taste, and the meanings embedded in objects and their arrangement. She has described herself as a novelist who inadvertently became a visual artist, foregrounding the relationships between things rather than individual images or objects.
