Attilio Mineo
Attilio Mineo (1918–2010) was an Italian-American composer, arranger, and bandleader best known for Man in Space with Sounds (1962), an album commissioned for the Seattle World's Fair. The record imagined the sonic landscape of space travel, combining Mineo's modernistic orchestral writing with eerie electronic and pre-electronic effects, for a work of startling formal ambition.
Mineo spent decades playing piano in big bands before turning to composing and arranging, writing five symphonies and four string quartets. Long out of print, Man in Space with Sounds was reissued and became a cult favourite among collectors of space-age pop and electronic curiosities, his most enduring legacy.
